Research at the UT College of Medicine Chattanooga

 

Research

The University of Tennessee College of Medicine Chattanooga has a long history of quality research performed by medical students, residents, fellows, faculty, and community partners.  

 

Research priorities have previously been established for our campus by the UT College of Medicine Chattanooga Dean's Office in concert with the respective Departmental Chairs, faculty, and Erlanger physicians.

 

 

Current research being conducted on our campus and with our partners, the Erlanger Health System, and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) include:

  • Population health-based studies
  • Clinical trials in oncology
  • Emergency medicine and emergency response
  • Clinical trials in stroke and neurological diseases
  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Colo-rectal surgery
  • Surgical oncology
  • Infectious disease/hospital infections
  • Clinical trials in cardiology
  • Clinical trials in gastroenterology (internal medicine)
  • Clinical trials in urology
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology

tubesThe UT College of Medicine Chattanooga provides support to faculty and staff in their efforts to obtain external funding for investigator-initiated research and other sponsored projects, while ensuring compliance with University policy, sponsor policy, and applicable law.  The UT Health Science Center in Memphis has made a commitment to making the Chattanooga campus a member of its network in striving to become one of the top health science research entities in the United States.

 

As of May 1, 2018, we welcome Giuseppe Pizzorno, PhD, PharmD, as Associate Dean for Research for the UT College of Medicine Chattanooga.  He holds the rank of Professor in the Department of Medicine.  Dr. Pizzorno will also serve as the Chief Research Officer for Erlanger Health System and its Clinical Research Institute.                                                                                                            

Gregory W. Heath, DHSc, MPH, Professor,  Department of Medicine, serves as Director of Research for the Chattanooga Campus.  His primary faculty appointment is with the local University of Tennessee at Chattanooga where he serves as the Guerry Professor for Health and Human Performance, as well as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research.  Dr. Heath brings both his skills as an epidemiologist and his nationally and internationally-recognized research experience to our college.
